I am reading what has to be one of the most interesting books I have ever read. it is a tad difficult to work through and with two trying to get to sleep at the same time, alost impossible.
it is called "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski
anyone ?? anyone ???

Not heard of that one Angel. What's it about? I've had my nose in text books for the last couple months, so not much time for my own reading. I do attempt it, but I can't keep my eyes open.

well i had heard of it too embie, and happened to walk by and see it on a table (i cant seem to get thru barnes and nobles without an armful, that is my addiciton .. books) and so i picked it up, read the flap and then thumbed thru it. it is a sea of footnotes and it is really two stories simulatnouesly going on at the same time. i am not sure what it is about, except there is so much to it. the "jest" of it is it is about a family who moves into a small country home from teh city and they experience the house getting bigger from the inside but not the outside! it is about much more than that and it is a "meaty" text but really fun read.
the left behind series ? i might actually own some of those. i read tons of peretti and then got into a couple of other popular christian writers, but none as good as peretti.
anyone else ?

I just finished "The Historiah" by someone - the name escapes me just now. It's a new book and pretty scary, so if you like being scared a little bit it's worth a read.

I've been reading a lot of "end of days" kind of books. Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank 1984 by George Orwell Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury Oh... and the Second Summer of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

1984 is one of my top favorite books ever. it was one of the required reading things that i actually loved. along with catcher in the rye.

Haha. Me either.
And all of those were required books for me in high school.
But I'm rereading them... and I'm truly amazed at how my perspective has changed since I last read it (I jot in the margins). My thinking from 14 to 19 has really changed. =/

anyone read "A Million Tiny Little Peices" ? i am hearing lots about it and went ahead and ordered it at barnes and noble. anyone heard anything about it ? i dont usually like oprah's picks, but this one is getting some good reviews and has been on the best seller list for a while ... ?

I haven't read it but I have heard about it. It might be a good book.......
Right now I am reading "Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World". Ladies, I would highly suggest this one. It is very good and really speaks to you.

Does ANYONE read Chuck Palahniuk ? i LOVE him and want to know another author like him. same style. same plot explosion. and sub plots etc etc. i am reading anything by him i can getmy hands on ...

I am currently reading "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne. Its okay. But, as a Christian that has already read "Your Best Life Now" by Joel Olsteen.....it just seems to be the same concept. It is dealing with "the law of attraction". Which, to me, is very closely related to what Joel was relaying as "God's Favor". I can wrap my brain around the whole positive thinking idea. I like that. I don't like dwelling on the negative, although, I believe that it is easy to jump on the pessimistic bandwagon.
I also have "The Secret" dvd and the meditation cd.
Has anyone else read it? Or, did you see the Oprah show that featured it (I didn't).
Care to weigh in?

It really seems like just a re-packaged "I'm OK, You're OK" kinda book, kum ba ya stuff. I haven't read it and really don't have a lot of time to do so - maybe after work slows down some.
The meditation stuff, what do you think about it? I have a cousin very against stuff like that, like it opens your mind to evil spirits. What do you think?

Funny, when i started this thread, i had started that book "house of leaves" then put it down, read 30 other things and am just now finishing it.
my husband read "the secret" and it got him motivated to start his own business and he swears by it. he loved it and it suited him well. not really "kum bah ya" as much as it is changing the whole way you look at things, and the physics of it. deep stuff if you want to get that out of it. i didnt know there was meditation stuff. i will surely look into that for my man, he loved "the secret" ....
right now i am reading scary stuff as usual, and just ordered three new books, but i doubt they are talk about it here kinda stuff, and i am not sure why .... i can't seem to find groups who like to talk about scary books and the introspection they leave ME with ... i tend to find more people who like gore and ick.
anyone else ? am i SUCH a book nerd!

Ok...Allen, I totally understand about what your cousin thinks. I, too, felt very strongly against that sort of thing. My youth leader preached against playing anything (ie. TV, stereo, etc) while sleeping. He said that he believed that there really was "something" to the subliminal thing. So, through all the years, I followed what he believed.
You may or may not remember my sleep deprivation problem thru the years. But, I do not sleep. Not much anyway. Matter of fact....just a few weeks ago, the doctor suspected that I was having seizures due to sleep deprivation (those were his words). I have prayed...quoted scripture, read....taken a truck load of Sominex OTC sleeping pills....I have tried red wine.....and I am immune to Nyquil. So, looking into this meditation CD that you play to relax you to go to sleep was worth it (to me) to check into.
The book makes little reference to God. Unlike the cd. It references God over and over....atleast on a conscious level. I am trusting (cautiously) that it isn't piping un-Godlike things into my brain subliminally. I guess that cannot be proven. It has relaxed me. And, I do fall asleep when I listen to it. I put my cd player on repeat so that it plays all night. A good friend of mine, at work, loved it so much that she has ordered other cd's from the company. She absolutely loves the one on prayer.
I have not uncovered anything negative or evil. And, I hope that I have enough God given sense to realize otherwise.
I have enjoyed the sleep though.
I respect what you say about your cousin. Because I was taught that too. But, I also am not ashamed or convicted that I tried something that seems to have done me some good. Does that make sense???
Also, Angel, I got it on Amazon.

I haven't looked into it; myself I really don't have an opinion one way or the other. One thing I've tried to be careful with over the years is guard my mind from things that aren't positive - I don't read horror books, watch horror movies, listen to music not uplifting, etc. It's not that I'm afraid of whatever, it's that there's only so much time in a day and why not choose to input positive things. There's scripture about this, let me find it. Here it is, I think it speaks to what I was talking about: "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you." - Phillipians 4:4-9I don't know much about "the secret" but mostly judge it by the people pushing it nationally - the people I see that make a big deal about it on that level I don't care much for their judgement in other areas. People might think it's a little pretentious on my part, but it's just one of those things that seems real marginal to me so why invest the time? I'm glad it seems to work for you tho... I may need to investigate it more just to have that answer 'in and out of season'
