Okay everyone listen up...
I didn't want to step on Steve's post, so I posted here...hope it's alright. I have some important news. I am leaving on Sunday July 13 for 5 weeks to attend Port Security Specialist "A" School in Yorktown, Virgina. What is a Port Security Specialist and what is "A" school? Well right now in the Coast Guard I am just a low Seaman- I don't have a specific job, in fact I don't have one at all. I'm just a grunt. But starting next Sunday, I will have a specific job and no longer be a grunt. What is a Port Security Specialist? Well here's what the books say...
"The Port Security Specialist “A” School Coast Guard trains personnel in Physical Security, Maritime Law Enforcement, Weapons Familiarization and Qualification, Port Security Unit Missions, Counter-Terrorism, Computer Usage and methods of providing security assistance for unit operations."
Hope that answers your questions =) This is NOT like boot camp where the only means of communication is by letters. I get the weekends off and I get to call home every night if I'm not busy studying. I get to live in a dorm like room with a roomate and classes are from 5.30AM to around 5PM Eastern on the weekdays. Also people don't yell at your face...it's like college in fact. This job was kinda tough to get into because there's only 2 classes per year for this job and you also have to be a Reservist. That's me! As soon as I get there I will try to call you all and let you know how things are going. You can try to call my cell phone and leave a message but whether or not I will have service out there, I don't know. Try anyway. Anyway, I have to go now, but if you have any questions or want to say goodbye, call the cell. Carry on and Semper Paratus.
