.. but marrow is inside the bone...

Somma you guys know I donated bone marrow January 2000 to a leukemia patient. The only information they gave me about the recipient was that she was a 10 year old girl in "another country". Weeks and months went by and I never heard another thing about her, so, being the ever optimist that I am, I thought she musta not done well...

Last week at a dinner for bone marrow donors in the area I found out that the girl is surviving and lives in France. They will be checking for me to get some more info if possible, but that is just the greatest news

How wonderful it must be to know one of the deepest parts of you lives on in someone so far away !!! I would donate, but I am skeered. How bad did it hurt ? From what I remember you telling me, you were hurtin'. But you are a baby ..(just pickin') so, I could probably handle it jsut fine ! (gotta jab at ya) ... but what was the recovery like ?

Getting on the registry is nothing more than drawing a vial of blood. You have a better chance of winning the lottery to matching someone, but you never know unless you join the registry. I joined because my nephew had leukemia and I wanted to be available if we matched.

There is no way to compare the recovery (a couple days of soreness) to the opportunity to save someone's life. Those who have given birth probably understand what I mean. Not pickin on you either Jen, but all I can say is I would do it again (and again) knowing what it does feel like.

I'm on the registry...

We had a bone marrow drive for a young Christian girl in our town...You would not believe the outpouring of love and support for this girl...

While I wasn't a match, God in His infinite grace provided 7 matches out of that drive. Do you have any idea what those odds are??? God odds!

I was awed and humbled by that...

We had 13 donors at the dinner... 7 of them came from one donor drive a while back for a boy in high school. He didn't find a match, but 7 others that probably wouldn't have had one were able to get one...

So, uh... What exactly happens when you donate? They take your marrow?

Yes... they have 2 different techniques - I think you get to choose which. Either way, the benefit far outweighs the small amount of discomfort involved.
