Who The Heck Are You Anyway? A Devotional
© 2002 Steve Lattier and Men’s Help Ministries I seem to bump into people every once in a while that just don’t seem to know who they are or why they are even here on this earth. There are several personality types that fit into this description too. They range from the Egotist to the Introvert, neither of which have got a very good handle on who they are in God’s eyes. I used to be the former, I was puffed up and full of the physical and mental accomplishments I had achieved without giving due credit to our sovereign Lord for His guidance and blessings getting my physical body to achieve those things. For almost 15 years I was living in an unusable state, far from God. It was only until I learned my place, who I was, that things clicked for me. On the other side of the coin are those who do not value themselves, whether they are just shy or even to the point of flat not feeling worthy or worse not liking themselves or their physical body that God Himself gave them. Do you see yourself somewhere in this spectrum Christian? God has a word for you this week. It is an eternal word and the power of it is a great equalizer. If you are up, it will gently correct you and set you in your place, if you are down it will joyously lift you to your feet again.
Lets take a look at just who we are. We are mankind or man. Man comes from the Hebrew "Zakar,” which means essentially, humankind. Zakar has an older root word that is spelled the same that means to remember or to make a memorial. So following that train of thought, we are a memorial to God, that God made in His own image. God made man in His image. (Genesis 1:26) "Image" in Genesis is the Hebrew word “Tselem.” Tselem is from another root word meaning "to shade" So, continuing in our same thought pattern, if we are to be shaded by God then we MUST to be next to Him. To sum it up, we are a memorial to God that is right next to Him in His shade!!!!
The Word:Psalm 139:1 O LORD , you have searched me and you know me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD . 5 You hem me in-behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.Not only are you a real life memorial to God, He knows every detail about you. More detail than even you do, heck He even knows what you are gonna say next! You can’t even say that about your best friend can you. God values you so much that he pays attention to you. There is a saying that goes like this. “Love is spelled T-I-M-E.” That doesn’t just work for you and me, that is how God gets involved. He took the time to figure you out to the smallest detail, you are His!
The Word:Ephesians 1:4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will-- 6to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. That is mighty humbling and at the same time sends waves of awed joy coursing through you doesn’t it? To think that you and I were chosen before God stepped out of the infinite and created the universe, wow! Did you know that we are/were not only “just” chosen?
The Word:1 John 3:1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears,[1] we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.Children! We are HIS children. Once you have accepted your salvation you become His child. No, you are not the boss and no, you are not some outsider, you are FAMILY! What does a child do? A child will spread toys all over the floor, why? Because they have grace from their parents. Did you know that you can spread your stuff all over God’s living room? A child will walk up and dig in the pantry and refrigerator to get what they want to eat. Again, why? Because the child has relationship with you. With any relationship comes privilege. So it is with God. If you are called His child and you develop a relationship with Him you can “raid his fridge.” That is what your prayer life amounts to, cabinet surfing at God’s house!
The Word:Deuteronomy 26:18 And the LORD has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands. You are:
1. A memorial to God.
2. Worth knowing intimately.
3. Chosen before Creation.
4. A child, family!
5. And now a “treasured possession!”
What an awesome place to be in the grand scheme of things, and oh, yes there is a grand scheme and you have a special part to play according to God! Now if someone asks you that question, “Who the heck are you?” you will have the answer to give them!
Pray with me: Father, I have fallen short of your dreams for me. Forgive my shortcomings and sins. I am lifted up this day and set in my rightful place by your edifying words Lord. I am you child and that simply blows me away! Lord help this word to sink into my very bones so that it will not depart from me, let this word get reflected back at you in the form of closer worship and deeper love. I love you Father! Change me forever! Make it so in Jesus name. Amen!If you are not saved and would like more information please email me, see me, or visit us at
