Yes there are two different gifts. There are messages in tongues given to the entire congregation in a church setting for the edifying of the body. These are the tongues that have interpretation. Note that the Bible says interpretation not translation. God will lay on the heart of a believer within the congregational setting the message He wants to edify the Body with. The other type of tongues is for self edification. This is referred to as praying in the spirit. Jude vrs. 20 says that it builds up your most Holy faith. Romans Ch. 8 around verses 27-29 talk about praying in the spirit as well. Of course it is spoken of in 1 Corinth 12 & 14. Great question...a lot of people don't know the difference. In a church setting though, if someone is just praying in the spirit (speaking in tongues) they aren't giving a message to the Body, they are simply magnifying God with tongues of angels. If they address the Body and give the message in tongues, then the interpretation should build the Body up.

You said you have heard pagans babble stuff in cultish meetings. That is pretty wild stuff I admit. But I assure you that they weren't speaking in tongues. The Bible clearly says that when we speak in tongues we magnify God. It is strange to a lot of people. Even in Acts Ch. 2, Peter said... "We aren't drunk as you suppose but this is that which the prophet Joel has spoken of..."

Good answer prophet joel

I had not considered answering it like that, it is definitely 2 types of gifts at work... all trying to tame one of the wildest beasts on earth, our tongue...

Thank you for adding that Allen...that relates very well to a study that Joel was doing in James a while back where it says no man can tame the tounge. But GOD CAN! (obviously one way is through our prayer language)...Not so much that this shed light on anything...I just figured I'd add it...(cause I'm feeling low about not having enough posts)

seemed like a good topic to pick back up...

tongues are for personal edification in private prayer to God. Tongues are for praying for someone else in intercessory prayer, same tongues as first. another tongue is prophecy in church setting for believers to be edified. a word from God to His church, to build faith in the body of believers. it must accompanied by interpretation of the tongue. two gifts of the spirit that always go together. the third tongue is a real earthly language, supernatural, and for the unbeliever to hear. this is what happened at pentecost. tongues are for all believers for personal prayer and edification, as for prophecy or real language, i believe it is for the Holy Spirit to discern the giving. Paul does say however we should all desire to Prophesy.
As an Assembly of God believer(formerly Southern Baptist) and first hand witness of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, I do believe tongues is followed by the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and the initial tongue is one of Praise to the Father. Not prophecy or real language as it would not make any sense or do good for others.
I have seen children, my pastor has seen deaf and his father in-law has witnessed mentally handicapped receive Baptism of Holy Ghost,...it is real and for all who seek it.
